Missing something

While in Florida - many, many times... the correct way to make a Rum Runner is not with Lime Juice and you use two kinds of rum!

Here are the ingredients:
1 oz. Light Rum
1 oz. Dark Rum
1 oz. Blackberry brandy
1 oz. banana liquer
1/2 oz. grenadine
crushed ice

The lime juice only makes it sour! Don't USE! The drink already packs enough punch and is AWESOME!

Don't forget to fill the straw with a strong rum like 151.
Watermelon Rum Runners

Hey, I agree with missing something! However, while in South Beach, I had a Watermelon Rum Runner at Mangos - awesome!! I am going to try and duplicate it by exchanging the grenadine with Rose's Watermelon instead.
The real rum runner

As anyone from south fla knows, the real rum runner comes from tiki johns at holiday isle, islamorada,

Bacardi black rum
light rum
3/4 oz creme de bananae
3/4 oz blackberry brandy
1/2 oz grenadine
3/4 oz lime juice

top with 151
I think it's up to individual taste

I live in Florida... and the "correct" way to make a Florida rum runner is however the bartender decides. :^) A squeeze from a Key Lime does add a Floridian twist, but is not required. I find them perfectly balanced with lime... but if your mileage varies, then change the octane to your personal tastes.
Try orange juice

I am a bartender in Key West and have used orange juice not lime for ten years.
Rum Runner Night Woo Hoo

The bartender Rick at Doubletree (Mango's) in North Redington Beach, FL made my boyfriend and I one with no lime juice, it was great, so great that I woke up the next day and my ass hurt, couldn't walk. Some vacation it was. Can't wait to go back for one more Rum Runner night.

One more opinion

I lived in Florida for almost 30 years and was a bartender in the south part of the state for over 20. I have spent my share of time in the Florida Keys and can vouch for the fact that the original recipe for Rum Runners was created by a bartender at Holiday Isle in Islamorada. You can actually buy t-shirts there with the recipe on the back (or at least you could). The recipe on the t-shirt has two different types of rum (light and dark) and DOES include lime juice. Most restaurants these days will add juice of some kind to the mix but strictly becuz it's cheaper to do so.
