A proper old fashioned should not have any fruit in it especially not cherries!

Substitute Brandy for Whiskey, garnish with cherries or olives.

No fruit in the old fashioned!! Continual stirring with gradual addition of ice and bourbon, can be finished with the zest of an orange...
No lemon

I used to be a bartender and I've been drinking Old-Fashioneds for years. Live in New York City and not to be snob - but TRUST ME - Old Fashioned DOES have fruit. I was at the legendary Rainbow Room a couple of weeks ago.

Cherry and Orange muddled. Never in my life heard of lemon, although a lemon TWIST as garnish IS fine. :)
YES Fruit!

Old Fashioned's *do* contain fruit. The orange and cherry are essential. The lemon is a new twist (no pun intended) on this classic. Juilen is correct.

To be honest you should muddle a cherry and orange peel into a fiune paste, this adds flavour to the drink. Where did you hear the idea of lemon????

Sorry to rain on your respective parades guys, but I happen to be very big on the L.A. cocktail circuit, and I can tell you for certain that the old-fashioned contains blackberries and a few muddled capyberra pellets.
