I substituted raw honey for the sugar and added 2 teaspoons. Much more flavor. Delicious.

Of the myriad ways to concoct, the most sensible to me is to boil half a mug of water in a microwave, then add the rest to it--spices and rum. I bet this would keep it the hottest longest. Too much clove in this recipe; use light BROWN sugar; traditional spice--ground cardamom. Others add ground nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove, in that order; others shun cinnamon except to use as a stirrer. Some add vanilla ice cream. Topping: whipped cream. Add a pinch of salt if you utilize unsalted butter.

Hot Buttered Rum variation

This recipe is great ... but try these variations: use brown sugar (same amount), and hot apple cider instead of hot water. That creates a nice balance for the cloves.
Yes indeed!

In the interest of my weak heart, I doubled the rum, butter, the cloves, the honey and halfed the water. My heart feels much better!

I've found that the darkest rum in this recipe has been the best.
