1 1/4 oz gin
1/4 oz maraschino liqueur
juice of 1 lemons
3 - 5 pinches sugar

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Juice the lemon and add to the shaker. Add a little sugar, if desired. Pour in gin and maraschino, and shake. Serve straight up in a cocktail glass.

The strict recipe does not have any sugar, but I like to add a little.

Bourbon and Branch

posted by Dr. Bob @ 08:59PM, 5/26/07

Had one earlier this week at the Bourbon and Branch in San Francisco. It is among the several "lost cocktails" listed on one page of their enormous menu (another is the Dempsey). Best bar ever!
A great 'lost' drink...

Here's my recipe...

2 oz gin
1 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz maraschino liqueur (preferably Luxardo)

The original recipe called for a couple dashes of creme de voilette, a liqueur nearly *impossible* to find in the U.S., that gave the Aviation it's cloudy blue/purple hue. Supposedly that's where the name comes from.
