The "Sonic Screwdriver" recipe was invented by Liz Mulhern of Omaha Nebraska, as a "companion" drink to go along with her favorite TV show. This recipe was inspired by (and named for) the tool of choice used by the main character in the BBC Sci-Fi show "Doctor Who".
The recipe keeps the very basic premise of the traditional screwdriver (Vodka and orange) but uses Vanilla Vodka for sweetness, Blue Curacao for orange flavor, and clear lemon/lime soda in place of the juice, to preserve the color of the Curacao and the citrus taste. The end result is still an orange flavored vodka beverage, but it is now sweeter, bubbly, and a striking blue color that exactly matches the business end of the instrument used in "Doctor Who"... A Sonic Screwdriver.
The recipe was originally posted in her online journal on July 18th, 2007. It has, since then, become a popular drink among her friends and family, and fellow fans of the show with whom she has shared the recipe.
